1000 Flowers

The scent.

Black jelly beans—it’s a fairly universal phenomenon that they get separated from the other flavours after tinkling out of the candy dispenser. Either you love them, or loathe them.

People who fall into the former category will doubtlessly relish in Jessica September Buchanan’s gorgeous perfume Réglisse Noire, named from the French for “black liquorice”. With further notes of white pepper, star anise, fresh ginger, cocoa, patchouli and vanilla, among others, this sophisticated and complex fragrance from the British Columbia–born perfumer (who now resides in scent-central Grasse, France) is a play on the ubiquitous black candy, sure to arouse the senses. Her fragrance line, 1000 Flowers, is sold at Lark in Vancouver, and also includes the floral Fleur No. 1.
