The Britannia Mine Celebrates 110 Years

History unearthed.

The Britannia Mine Museum is celebrating 110 years of discoveries since the mine first opened in 1904. In its heyday, the mine was the economic backbone of British Columbia as the largest copper producer in the British Commonwealth. (Other minerals such as gold and silver were also extracted from the mountains.) Following its closure in 1974, a great deal of work went into upgrading the mine, and today, the Britannia Mine Museum on the Sea to Sky corridor is a National Historic Site, encouraging mining awareness through entertainment, education programs, and exhibits. Just like miners did, visitors can climb aboard a mine train and rumble into a dark portal through 110 years of history. Having undergone a major $14.7-million facelift in 2010, the site now includes a Visitor Centre and events plaza, Canadian Mining Hall of Fame, and popular post-and-beam gold panning area.
