MONTECRISTO collaborates with some of the finest writers, illustrators, and photographers working in Vancouver to create an engaging, eclectic editorial mix, including fashion, culture, food, wine, travel, books, art, beauty, business, architecture, design, and more. The magazine also puts a particular emphasis on philanthropy and local history, as well as artisans and craftspeople in Vancouver and abroad.

Jr. Graphic Designer, NUVO and Montecristo Magazine

Overview/Purpose:

Do you have a passion for publishing? Are you looking to develop your skills within a dynamic and fast-paced team environment? If so, an exciting opportunity as an Jr. Graphic Designer is available at NUVO and MONTECRISTO Magazines, one of Canada’s leading lifestyle print and digital publications, based in Vancouver.

NUVO and MONTECRISTO Magazines are looking for a motivated and dynamic art assistant ready to develop their skills, both online and in print. We are a small team, which means an opportunity to work across all aspects of publication—production, admin, design for print and digital, social media, etc. Reporting to the Creative Director, you are a clear and confident communicator, able to work without constant supervision.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design layouts for digital stories, print and marketing material.
  • Design digital assets for web.
  • Produce video reels for socials.
  • Assist with visual direction for print-to-web production.
  • Collaborate with editorial, production, and marketing departments.
  • Ensure NUVO and Montecristo branding and design standards are maintained across internal and external presentations.
  • Work directly with the Art Director on all aspects of photo shoot production, from securing location, communicating with contributors as needed and liaising with vendors to ensure that the shoot is successful and falls within budget.
  • Work as production assistant on photoshoots.
  • Conduct photo research for features and ensure supplied images are up to the standard.
  • Format assets for web and web clips.
  • Execute creative team’s administrative tasks including processing invoices and keeping log of payments.

Desired Skills & Qualifications:

  • 1+ years of design experience in publishing, agency or relevant field.
  • Proficient in creating graphic elements, layouts and spreads to spec for online, mobile and publishing.
  • Excellent creative and visual conceptualization, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced, evolving, dynamic environment.
  • Highly organized, detail oriented, and excellent communication skills; must be highly self-sufficient and resourceful.
  • Ability to prioritize work and handle multiple projects with tight deadlines.
  • Professional demeanour with ability to interact at all levels within the organization.
  • Proficient use of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
  • Experience with a UI design and prototyping tool UxPin is an asset.

MONTECRISTO follows and engages with environmentally and socially responsible initiatives. Our in-office recycling program diverts materials from the landfill back into reuse. MONTECRISTO uses Rolland’s Enviro® paper made from 100 per cent sustainable recycled paper for corporate communications. Made from 100 per cent post-consumer sustainable fibre, and with biogas as a main energy source, Rolland’s Enviro® product line has the smallest environmental footprint in North America’s paper industry.
