Toque Fundraiser

MONTECRISTO Blog: Toque

The year was 1973. Eight artists (Martin Bartlett, Mo van Nostrand, Kate Craig, Henry Greenhow, Glenn Lewis, Eric Metcalfe, Michael Morris and Vincent Trasov) shared a vision to create a space where like-minded creatives could explore and conceive new art forms. Together, they founded the Western Front Society, a Vancouver-based, artist-run centre for contemporary art and new music.

It quickly became a focal point for poets, visual artists, and the like to congregate and practice experimental art. Today, its diverse platform continues to grow, producing and presenting myriad artist-driven initiatives such as exhibitions, workshops, performance art and, of course, the Toque fundraiser.

The annual fundraiser and craft sale returns December 6 and 7 for the Western Front’s 40th anniversary. Held at Luxe Hall, the two-day event draws between 1,500 and 2,000 visitors every year and features an eclectic selection of works by artists, designers, and artisans. A limited-edition, artist-designed tea towel is also commissioned every year for Toque —this year’s crafted by Vancouver artist Arvo Leo. Admission is by donation, with proceeds supporting the Western Front Society.
