Shipyards Night Market

Down by the quay.

If there is one thing visitors won’t find at North Vancouver’s Shipyards Night Market, it’s a cell phone case—and that is something the Lower Lonsdale community is proud of. Instead, a celebration of the West Coast lifestyle awaits, from quality artisanal goods, to a colourful display of the city’s diverse food truck scene, to exceptional live entertainment, all rolled into one bustling Friday evening.

Set within the historic Shipyards District of North Van—a leisurely stroll beyond the Lonsdale Public Market and the stylish Polygon Gallery—this night market opens every Friday evening from May through to September 28, 2018. Great for young families and dogs (though note that pups must be leashed), this picturesque gathering spot overlooks the Burrard Inlet and attracts a fun mix of attendees. As the crowd begins to filter in at 5 p.m., anticipate a lively tune from the Shipbuilder’s Stage to fill the air, inviting kids with balloon animals to run around and dance. Take this opportunity to procure a Deep Cove Shipyard Lager from the beer garden, located beneath the yellow Second World War heritage crane in the middle of the square.

Next, reserve a table to observe the evening’s lineup of British Columbia talent while a friend rounds up tasty bites from the rotating food trucks in the area (including Vij’s Railway Express, Disco Cheetah, and Tacofino). If looking for a view of the sunset instead, a plentiful supply of benches exists along the pier: a romantic walk extending 700 feet over the water. Before the night is through, drop by the Pipe Shop’s indoor market tables for a unique souvenir to bring home, or perhaps a local piece of art during the expanded artist night series. Offered during only four nights of the season, this special event sees local sculptors, designers, and artists gather to display their works inside the plaza.

Indeed, Lower Lonsdale is quickly becoming the place to be. Following a recent refresh of the existing market, the LoLo (as it is affectionately called) has more exciting plans on the horizon. With multiple residential buildings, a third boutique hotel, a $35 million public recreation facility—featuring a covered skating rink and children’s water park with a retractable roof—and the North Vancouver Museum going up within the next couple of years, there has never been a better time to hang on the pier.
