You Can Still Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Vancouver This Year. Here’s How

It’s time for a party. Seriously, don’t we all need an excuse to let our hair down and have a little fantasy fun? Well, perhaps Cinco de Mayo is just the thing to inject a little fiesta into your life.

Start by creating a little bit of Mexico wherever you can (sitting room, balcony, deck)—pull out all the photos from your last beach trip, drape those brightly coloured beach towels around, and put that crocheted hammock up, already. Pull on your finest sarong or board shorts, get the flip-flops out of retirement, blow up the beach ball, and, if you have one, ready that surfboard for some virtual wave catching. Do not get caught up in authenticity here: we can only work with what we have, and if that’s plastic pink flamingos and a shot glass with a sombrero on it, it’s all good. Like conceptual art, the point is the intention, not the execution.

That said, there is simply no excuse to eat or drink poorly at this party, particularly when there are good options to have a genuine taste of Mexico delivered to your door. ¡Que bueno!

Pick up your Cinco de Mayo box from Chancho’s Davie Street location and you’ll be blessed with a pound of the excellent carnitas (shoulder, belly, or a mixture of both) or vegetarianos tacos, as you prefer. Fresh corn tortillas, chips, salsas, black beans, and guacamole are included, as is your choice of margarita or michelada mix. Customize your party options by adding on beers, wines, Mexican sodas, or even your own masa mix. Order in advance for May 5 pickup.

If you’re missing those boozy sunny afternoons on this Kitsilano institution’s patio, get ready to recreate the feeling, if not the aspect, in your own home. Order your favourite dishes from the extensive takeout and delivery menu, or simply opt for one of the taco kits or enchilada trays and pretend you’re back on the beach.

¡Tequila!

What’s a Cinco de Mayo party without the agave nectar? Make your own margaritas from scratch, up or frozen, by all means. But if your bartending could use a little help, try a cocktail kit from Dachi with everything you need to transport you straight back to Tijuana—plus a recipe to make sure you get the balance right.

Still too much effort? Nude has your back. Its selection of 100-calorie tequila sodas (lime or pineapple) are now available for delivery through SkipTheDishes or pickup from Darby’s Liquor Store. Fill the fridge, turn up the music, and Zoom in your friends for a virtual conga line. You know you want to.
