When at the grocery store, we often find ourselves checking the ingredients on the side of a product’s box, scanning to see if there are certain fixings we find unfamiliar or unwanted. When the name of a chemical or preservative is spotted, that’s a cue for many to put down the package and walk away. If our food choices are a cause for concern, shouldn’t our beauty routines be, too? When it comes to everyday makeup, products packed with unnatural and synthetic substances seem to still be the norm.
For Burt’s Bees, this was a call to action. A call to enhance a woman’s inherent glow without the use of harmful ingredients. In a time when many are trying to be their most authentic selves, Burt’s Bees is making the transition to natural beauty a whole lot easier—and more accessible.
Known for its simple beeswax-based balms, the North Carolina-based company now has its eyes set on the cosmetics industry, offering a range of must-haves made with natural ingredients. The brand first teased the launch with its glossy lipsticks, which come in a variety of shiny and moisture-rich colours, including Nude Rain and Blush Ripple. Now adding to that are seven products essential to the makeup bag: liquid foundation, powder foundation, blush, mascara, eyeshadow, eyeliner, and brow pencil.
Whether it be the nourishing and vitamin-infused blush in Toasted Cinnamon, or the long-wear eyeshadow palette in Blooming Desert, the products are 100 per cent natural, with key ingredients derived from bamboo and honey.
In celebration of bringing Burt’s Bees beauty into Canada, Abena Antwi, lead innovation scientist at Burt’s Bees, hosted an intimate group at Tofino’s Wickaninnish Inn. Speaking about the creation of the products, she described the benchmark she set for herself to deliver the very best for every woman. What sets Antwi apart from other makeup developers is her refusal to settle. She was told multiple times that in order to create a high-performance formula, she would have to give up her all-natural directive. She rebelled and kept her eye on the prize, finding innovative ways to create natural products without parabens and phthalates, and without testing them on animals.
The collection’s Goodness Glows Liquid Makeup is a standout. The easy-to-wear foundation, available in 12 shades, leaves skin feeling hydrated and radiant thanks to ingredients sourced responsibly from meadowfoam rather than silicone.
Burt’s Bees beauty is a celebration for the minimalist—because makeup should always leave you feeling your best.
