Michael Kors 30th Anniversary

Kors, of course.

American sportswear icon and fashion designer Michael Kors is celebrating the 30th anniversary of his eponymous label. Born on Long Island, Kors started his fashion career in the Big Apple at the tender age of 19. After 30 years spent building his namesake brand, Kors now oversees three collections that run the lifestyle gamut. Last June, Kors was honoured with a Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

The 30th anniversary is a big year for the brand, with three noteworthy additions to Kors’s retail empire; first, a new flagship on Madison Avenue at 67th Street in New York. Not to be confused with its original location on Madison at 76th, the new boutique boasts 5,500 square feet. Kors will also open his first freestanding retail location in France at the ever-glamorous fashion headquarters that is the rue Saint Honoré in Paris. The city of love has a soft spot in Kors’ heart; he spent seven years in Paris as the creative director for Céline. Closer to home for Vancouverites, Kors recently opened a lifestyle boutique in our downtown core. The new Pacific Centre location houses a wide selection of accessories from all the Michael Kors collections, including leather goods, shoes, eyewear and fragrances, as well as a selection of ready-to-wear from his diffusion line MICHAEL Michael Kors.

“I’ve always loved laid back West Coast style,” Kors says of the Vancouver opening. “I often have this in the back in my mind when I’m designing pieces like maxi skirts or tunics which look both effortless and chic when mixed with great sandals, over sized bags and of course a pair of fabulous sunglasses.” He’s the man behind the brand that sets the pace—if not the standard—for jet-set living, and despite so many things on the go, Kors shows no signs of stopping. It’s no wonder the saying goes 30 is the new 20.
