Mother of Pearl

The art of sportswear.

When spring’s penchant for novelty graphic prints marries with our current love of minimalist sportswear, wearable pieces and art can truly intersect in our wardrobes. Mother of Pearl has found the sweet spot.

Helmed by Maia Norman (former partner of the art world’s enfant terrible Damien Hirst), the London-based line of luxe sportswear collaborates with an acclaimed artist each season for an exclusive motif. For spring/summer 2014, multimedia artist Mat Collishaw is featured. The tropics took centre stage on the season’s runways, from Martinique prints to abstract Hawaiian florals, and Mother of Pearl turned to the edible variety for their outing. Citrus fruits and flowers are splashed across fluid silk tees and structured cotton dresses and paired with gabardine trousers and leather in tropical hues.

Touted as “the greatest contemporary artist you’ve never heard of” by The Telegraph, Collishaw often explores the darker side of the interaction between nature and culture. Inspiration for Mother of Pearl began with his series of insecticide prints and found its way to Carmen Miranda’s produce. The result is nothing short of mouth-watering.

Mother of Pearl is available in Vancouver exclusively at Rebecca Bree.
