Much like Vancouverites, Norwegians are no strangers to rain. So it is no surprise that a fantastic rainwear brand was birthed there, and makes its home there, still, both taking encouragement from its surroundings and appealing to an international audience.
Swims, as it is aptly called, was founded by Johan Ringdal in Oslo in 2006. Available in Europe and North America, the playful brand recently launched a new website and digital store, making for easier connection between consumer and good. Swims designs teeter between classic Scandinavian and something entirely different, offering up products that are simple and minimal while at the same time fun and cheeky. The brand was built around the galosh, and set out to redesign and redefine it, morphing it from a clumsy rainy day item to a shoe that also works in the sunshine. They function in puddles, for sure, but suit a day on the boat just fine, too.
When it comes to connecting with a West Coast crowd, it is about intention more than looks. While Swims is quite bright and playful for a Scandinavian brand, it is still inspired by its natural habitat in Oslo. Loafers, rain boots, jackets, even bags—all retain a sense of adventure, the Norwegian spirit, a connection to nature. They toe the line between style and use.
