Sometimes it’s what is on the outside that counts.
A refrigerator’s purpose is, simply, to keep things cool and fresh, but the recent collaboration between Dolce & Gabbana and Smeg proves that the everyday kitchen item can be downright cool and fresh itself, too.
For a special limited edition of Smeg’s Fab28 model, Dolce & Gabbana lent its aesthetic and creative juice to craft what is likely the most stylish selection of fridges, and surely instant collector’s pieces. Launched at Salone del Mobile 2016 in Milan in April, the series of an exclusive 100 items features images hand-painted by Sicilian artists. Taking inspiration from Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, of course, the refrigerators also pay homage to the traditional Sicilian Cart (a horse-drawn wagon covered in heritage and folklore) and its historic marionette theatre. That means bright and richly coloured scenes depicting cart wheels, medieval battle scenes, fruit, puppets, and knights. Each one-of-a-kind piece is mesmerizing, almost humming with activity as the patterns and hues enter kaleidoscopic realms.
Both being Italian companies, Smeg and Dolce & Gabbana unite under an umbrella of national pride, and of the country’s classic creativity and craftsmanship. Every refrigerator celebrates the routine, bringing opulence, extravagance, and playfulness to a commonplace thing. It’s cool, and it’s cool.
