Breakfast at Tiffany has taken on a whole new meaning.
While Truman Capote’s beloved character Holly Golightly would stand outside the iconic jewellery brand’s New York store windows and eat a pastry while staring longingly at the jewels within, fans of Tiffany can now experience a luxurious breakfast right inside the Fifth Avenue flagship’s walls.
Opened in late 2017, The Blue Box Cafe takes up a portion of the store’s fourth floor. After browsing the genius and playful selection of homewares—everything from table tennis paddles coated in signature robin’s egg blue, to porcelain dog dishes, to sunglasses, to the softest throw blankets—step inside the pristine, calming cafe for hearty a bite to eat.
“The Blue Box Cafe is actually the hardest place in New York to get a reservation,” boasts Tiffany CEO Alessandro Bogliolo, speaking to a small group of assembled guests and joking that even he has a hard time snagging a table. Indeed it is a small space, designed to make guests feel like they are inside one of Tiffany’s legendary blue jewellery boxes.
Tables, set charmingly with Tiffany porcelain and silverware, of course, set the tone for the sophisticated yet approachable food to come. For breakfast, coffee and Bellocq tea (including a special Tiffany blend) pair nicely with the fresh choices on offer: avocado toast with sprinkles of radish, sorrel, sprouts, sunflower seeds, and nasturtium; a bagel with smoked salmon, capers, cream cheese, red onion, and beefsteak tomatoes; buttermilk waffles with syrup and in-season poached fruit; or coddled egg with polenta, chicken sausage, and asparagus. A prix fixe lunch is also available later in the day, and menus change with the seasons, allowing for the freshest and highest-quality ingredients to be used. This is Tiffany, after all, and perfection is always on the menu.
From home goods to coveted jewels, the brand is about making people feel good in their skin—walking the dog becomes a special affair with a leather Tiffany leash, and heads are certainly held a little higher when donned with diamond Tiffany earrings. Jewellery in particular is an extension of its wearer, coming alive and positively enhancing the person it decorates. As Golightly says in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, “anyone who ever gave you confidence, you owe them a lot.”
