Amalia Smith stumbled upon the Batsheva Dance Company purely by chance: a classmate showed her a photo in high school science class. This was Amalia’s first glimpse into the Tel Aviv-based troupe, internationally-renowned for its visceral, raw, and unpredictable choreography. A Salt Spring Island native, Amalia trained as a dancer at Arts Umbrella in Vancouver before attending the San Francisco Conservatory, where she met Bobbi Jene Smith, a Batsheva veteran. Bobbi Jene introduced Amalia to Batsheva’s creative director and founder of Gaga movement language, Ohad Naharin. Amalia, now in her fifth season with Batsheva, is currently with the company on a six-week tour around North America.
