“ART: 21 – Art in the Twenty-first Century”

Celebratory, revelatory.

The not-for-profit organization ART21 is dedicated to highlighting artists working in the 21st century, from a wide range of cities around the world. Its television show, Art: 21 – Art in the Twenty-first Century, explores the work of contemporary art’s most prolific cities, and this season has chosen to include Vancouver. The hour-long episode airs Friday, Sept. 23 and features commentary, and plenty of visual surprises, from city icons Stan Douglas, Liz Magor, Brian Jungen, and Jeff Wall.

The series is in its eighth season, and for the first time focuses on individual artists working in their respective communities. Thus the episodes provide rare, often intimate moments in an artist’s life and work, and details the environments they work in. “Vancouver is such an exciting city, and the arts scene is vibrant,” says ART21 executive director Tina Kukielski. “With the four artists in this episode, I think viewers will instantly understand the international calibre of the artists and their work.” Hosted by Claire Danes, this season features narration provided by the artists themselves. This is riveting television, providing almost unheard of access to great artists at work.
