Four years ago, in 2022, Vancouver writer Kevin Chong (author of the novels The Double Life of Benson Yu and The Plague) made an audacious proposal: to write a story about every one of Vancouver’s 22 official neighbourhoods. This year brought the project to its conclusion, coming in at 24 stories with the necessary additions of the Downtown East Side and Chinatown. Told as a people’s history of place and time, laced with memorable characters, filled with snippets of poetry and memory, and beautifully illustrated by B.C. artist Bronwyn Schuster, the collection traces the history of the city through its booms and busts, hopes and failures, heroes and eccentrics.
